My Story: DEB

Pride in Respect | Lived Experience Stories: Deb

In this episode, Deb shares her lived experiences as a long-term survivor-advocate and a proud queer person of colour. She reflects on the insidious nature of intimate partner violence, the lack of appropriate support services, and how shame, racism, cultural expectations, religion, internalised homophobia and fear of coming out all intersect and create layers of silence and isolation.

Her story epitomises why family, domestic and intimate partner violence can often be invisible in the LGBTIQA+ community, why it is so important to break the silence, and the responsbility we all share to listen, believe, and keep the conversation going.
